GREECE

Located between Italy (on the west) and Turkey (on the east), Greece is known for its beautiful Mediterranean islands and its rich history. Athens, the modern capital of Greece, is often pointed to as “the birthplace of democracy.” This city produced such famous philosophers as Socrates, Plato, and Aristotle. The ancient Greeks were often involved in warfare. Alexander the Great of Macedon is well known for his military conquests throughout western Asia and Egypt, which served to spread the Greek culture and language.

The Greeks invested themselves in athletic training and competition; our modern Olympic games and marathons are based on their traditions and history. They were skilled in producing exquisite architecture and art. The Greeks were masters of dance, music, and poetry—and much of their literature was based on mythology. Paul entered their polytheistic environment to tell them about the one true God, who created the universe (Acts 17:24). The apostle called them to repent and prepare for the day of judgment, which will be overseen by the resurrected Christ (Acts 17:30, 31).
